Twenty-two years ago while under the grips of opioid withdrawal, Miriam’s son, Robert, committed the violent murder of two teenagers during an attempted robbery. Robert was caught, tried, and convicted of first-degree murder and has been sitting on death row ever since. In seven hours the state will execute him. As is the tradition, Robert is granted a last meal. His request: a slice of his mother’s apple pie. Miriam bakes the pie onstage while sharing her conflicted story with the audience. Finally, the pie is ready and she must choose whether or not to go through with this final act of compassion in spite of her son’s actions. This is a play about how we care for each other even when caring for each other does not come naturally and the tragedies of addiction seem insurmountable.
