Mauritius
By Theresa Rebeck
Directed by Chip Egan
(October 15 - 31, 2009)

After their mother's death, two estranged half-sisters discover a book of rare stamps that may include the crown jewel for collectors. One sister tries to collect on the windfall, while the other resists for sentimental reasons. In this gripping tale, a seemingly simple sale becomes dangerous when three seedy, high-stakes collectors enter the sisters' world, willing to do anything to claim the rare find as their own. Variety says “Unsurprisingly for a writer with extensive experience in TV police procedurals like ‘NYPD Blue’ and ‘Law & Order: Criminal Intent,’ one of Rebeck's strengths is her skill at stitching tension into every exchange.”

A Christmas Memory
By Truman Capote
Directed by Benjamin P. Robinson
(December 3 - 19, 2009)

First published in 1956, this much sought-after autobiographical recollection of Truman Capote's rural Alabama boyhood has become a modern-day classic. We are proud to be staging this warm and delicately directed production of A Christmas Memory--"a tiny gem of a holiday story". Seven-year-old Buddy inaugurates the Christmas season by crying out to his cousin, Miss Sook Falk: "It's fruitcake weather!" Thus begins an unforgettable portrait of an odd but enduring friendship between two innocent souls … one young and one old … and the memories they share of beloved holiday rituals.

Our Leading Lady
By Charles Busch
Directed by Benjamin P. Robinson
(April 15 - May 1, 2010)

Set in Washington, DC, in 1865, the play is about Laura Keene, the British-born stage actress whose company was performing Tom Taylor’s Our American Cousin at Ford’s Theatre the night Abraham Lincoln was shot and killed by John Wilkes Booth. In classic Charles Busch fashion, Our Leading Lady is a backstage comedy in which a presidential assassination is not merely a national tragedy but also a vexing interruption in a powerful woman’s quest for fame and glory. Imagine the collision of the Civil War era with Noises Off.

Driving Miss Daisy
By Alfred Uhry
Directed by Chip Egan
(June 10 - 26, 2010)
Starring Shirley Sarlin and Clark Nesbit

The place is the Deep South, the time 1948, just prior to the civil rights movement. Having recently demolished another car, Daisy Wertham, a rich, sharp-tongued Jewish widow of seventy-two, is informed by her son that she must rely on the services of a chauffeur. The person he hires for the job is a thoughtful, unemployed black man, Hoke, whom Miss Daisy immediately regards with disdain and who, in turn, is not impressed with his employer's patronizing tone and, he believes, her latent prejudice. Winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Play. A warm-hearted, humorous and affecting study of the unlikely relationship between an aging, crotchety white Southern lady, and a proud, soft-spoken black man. A long-run Off-Broadway success and an Academy Award-winning film. "The play is sweet without being mawkish, ameliorative, without being sanctimonious." —NY Times. "…a perfectly poised and shaped miniature on the odd-couple theme." —NY Post. "A winner … gives off a warm glow of humane affirmation." —Variety. "A total delight." —NY Daily News.

See Rock City
By Arlene Hutton
Directed by Nancy Halverson
(August 5 - 21, 2010)

A struggling but innately optimistic writer and his beautiful Appalachian wife have just returned from their honeymoon during the final days of WWII. The bucolic tone of their new life together is soon interrupted by a family tragedy and a choice that must be made to save their marriage. This tender portrayal of married life, set against the background of sweeping global change, shows the best of the human spirit and its ability to overcome any and all obstacles. The recipient of the MacLean Foundation's "In the Spirit of America" Award, See Rock City stands alone as a funny, touching and universal portrayal of a young couple very much in love.

Clarence Darrow
Clarence Darrow

By David W. Rintels
Directed by Nancy Halverson
Based on Irving Stone’s Clarence Darrow for the Defense
November 12 – 21, 2009

Here is the famous attorney reminiscing over his long and renowned career, touching on many of his famous trials including the "Monkey" trial and the sensational Leopold Loeb case. Darrow reviews much of America's legal history with salty humor, courtroom gusto and human relish. His private life and many contemporary events, including labor conditions, are woven into this story of a man who accepted unpopular cases and defended unpopular causes. This champion of dissenters and underdogs was also a writer and lecturer and he conjures up many famous people of his life and times. A study guide is available for teachers whose students attend the show.
